There is something deeply human about wanting to feel capable in your everyday life. To understand the systems around you. To stay connected to people who matter. To make decisions with confidence.
For many seniors, newcomers, Black and racialized individuals, and low-income earners in our communities, that sense of confidence is not always easy to come by, especially in a world that is becoming more digital by the day.
At Edmonton Unity & Empowerment Center, EUEC, this is the reality we see and respond to. With the support of the New Horizons for Seniors Program, our Seniors Financial Empowerment and Digital Literacy Program is designed to meet people where they are and help them move forward with clarity and confidence.
The Real Challenge People Face
On the surface, it may look like a technology issue. But when you listen closely, you begin to understand what people are really dealing with.
Someone is unsure whether a message is a scam or legitimate.
Someone else avoids online banking because it feels risky.
A newcomer is trying to figure out how credit works in Canada.
A job seeker wants to apply online but does not know how to present their experience in a way employers understand.
These are everyday situations, but they carry real consequences. They affect financial stability, personal safety, and access to opportunity.
For many, the issue is not ability. It is access to the right guidance and a safe space to learn.
A Program Built Around Real Lives
This program was not created from theory. It was shaped by conversations with people who are navigating these challenges in real time.
We focus on what people actually need:
- How to build a strong resume using simple tools, including Al, to improve job opportunities
- How to use phones and computers for daily tasks without feeling lost
- How to recognize and avoid scams, especially as cyber threats continue to rise
- How banking, credit cards, and financial systems work in Canada
- How to communicate online and stay connected with family and services
Each session is practical and hands on. There is room to ask questions, make mistakes, and try again. People are not rushed or judged. They are supported.
Why This Work Matters
We are living in a time where access to opportunity is closely tied to digital and financial knowledge.
Without these skills, people can feel locked out of important parts of life. They may miss job opportunities, struggle to access services, or become vulnerable to fraud.
This is especially true for seniors, newcomers, and communities that have historically faced barriers to access.
By focusing on both financial empowerment and digital literacy, this program helps people take control of their day to day lives in a very practical way.
What Happens When People Feel Supported
One of the most powerful parts of this work is what happens inside the room.
At first, people are hesitant. They are unsure. Some feel embarrassed to ask questions.
But over time, that changes.
They start trying things on their own.
They begin to understand how systems work.
They gain confidence in their decisions.
And then something even more meaningful happens. They begin to support each other.
That sense of community matters. It turns learning into something shared, not something done alone.
The Role of Partnership
Support from the New Horizons for Seniors Program makes it possible to deliver this kind of work in a way that is accessible and inclusive.
It allows EUEC to reach people who might otherwise be left out and to design programs that reflect real community needs.
When funding meets genuine purpose, the impact is clear and lasting.
Looking Forward
This program continues to grow, with a focus on reaching more people and deepening its impact.
The goal is straightforward. Everyone deserves the chance to feel confident navigating today’s world, regardless of age, background, or income level.
With the right support, people do not just adapt. They move forward with clarity and purpose.
Take the First Step
If you or someone you know could benefit from these workshops, we invite you to explore what EUEC has to offer.
There is no expectation to know everything. Just a willingness to start.
And sometimes, that is all it takes to open the door to something better.
